VoIP is about convergence, saving telecom costs. However, these types of systems also create more inroads for attack & lose lot of money because of VOIP frauds & attacks. In this article, I will discuss a number of different ways your communications system can be breached and how it can be protected.

Is your IP Phone system a target for VOIP attacks?
Every year the number of PBX fraud victims increases dramatically. More and more companies are targeted by individuals who are looking to bring down or exploit the communications system. Some do it for fun and others for illicit profit, but the end result is always the same… It results in the telephone bill of average 5,000$ USD to 80,000$ per attack to your carrier!

The most vulnerable targets remain small-medium size businesses that are new to managing their own VOIP. They either don’t have the IT experience and staff to properly secure and maintain the network, or they’re unaware of the risks altogether having recently switched from a landline system. Whatever the reason, many networks are consistently left unprotected. By the time most companies realize that something is wrong with their phone expenses, it’s too late—the network security has been compromised.

Here is the article link which explain about the VOIP attacks: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/20/technology/dial-and-redial-phone-hackers-stealing-billions-.html?_r=0

Toll fraud losses are growing at rate faster than global telecom revenues.

Things to be considered

  • The law is clear, you are the only responsible for the security of your phone system and any charges generated from it.
  • You will pay on average 5,000$ USD to 80,000$ per attack to your carrier.
  • Downtime of your whole system is very common.
  • In some cases you will have to find a different carrier.

Let’s first discuss what steps you can take to protect your account from hackers.

What is STM and how it can help you secure your VOIP infrastructure?

You may be familiar with UTM – Unified Threat Management device, but have you come across an STM – SIP Threat Management device, that is used to protect the IP PBX and IP Phones/Telephony infrastructure from threats/attacks?

The STM – SIP Threat Management device, is installed in front of any SIP based PBX system or gateway and offers extra layers of Toll fraud losses are growing at rate faster than global telecom revenues.

The STM – SIP Threat Management device, is installed in front of any SIP based PBX system or gateway and offers extra layers of security against numerous types of attacks that are targeted towards IP telephony infrastructure. The features offered by the STM complement those of a traditional firewall or UTM, and it can be installed in conjunction with a UTM.

Typical STM Installation Diagram
Here is a diagram of a typical STM installation in a VOIP network:

IP PBX Firewall (STM) - As a customer, you are responsible for securing your phone system. On average, an attack costs several thousands of US dollars. Our STM is installed in front of any SIP based PBX or gateway offering several layers of security against numerous types of attacks. Block specific IPs or countries, protect your PBX against hackers trying user names and passwords, someone is trying to flood your PBX with a DDos attacks? No problem!

Overview of the most common attacks to PBXs today and how the ALLO STM handles them

  1. SIP Device Fingerprinting: The hacker will try to identify which PBX software is running or which hardware you are using. Once he gets this info, he will look for their weaknesses and attack accordingly. The STM will simply not answer to such requests leaving the hacker in the dark.
  2. User enumeration: The hacker will request the system to divulge the extension numbers. Once he gets this info, he can then start looking for the passwords. The STM will not give out this info.
  3. Password Cracking Attempt: The hacker will try different user names and passwords in order to gain access to an extension or the admin panel of the PBX. The STM can be configured to block an IP if more than 10 trials are done within 10 minutes, for example.
  4. PHREAKERs: These guys take advantage of your negligence and steal from you without really hacking anything… They just check the most common/default user names and passwords used and if they get lucky, it’s a bad day for the victim.
  5. The Hardcore Scammer: Using scripts and special tools, these criminals know exactly what they are doing and have the knowledge to hack and exploit an unprotected phone system. The list of scams they can run is long but it can range from setting up an extension in your system and using it to sell cheap international calls, to more elaborate FAX back or CALL back scams where they use your system to call very expensive / minute phone numbers they control…
  6. DoS/DDoS attacks: These are designed to flood your PBX with an exaggerated numbers of packets. Their goal is to bring down your communication system and render it unusable. The STM will dynamically block for a pre-determined period of time, the IP or IPs from which these attacks originate.
  7. Cross Site Scripting attacks: These are amongst the most complex and hard to achieve. A script is injected in your PBX by the hacker and can program it to do all kind of malicious actions such as having all your extensions ring at once. The STM blocks off the intent and IP address (es) trying to do that.

Manufacturer’s message: The ALLO.com STM uses the real-time deep packet inspection engine, which is in fact a large database of known threats to PBXs. Much like a terrorist watch list, the STM uses this list to check each SIP packet heading towards your system and blocks any malicious packet as well as its originating IP.

Instead of losing thousands of dollars due to the victim of VOIP attacks, invest on 300$ worth of ALLO STM, which is plug & play.

Investing in an STM to protect your communications network is a must.

LANCOM Wireless ePaper & iBeacon

LANCOM Wireless ePaper & iBeacon

Brick-and-mortar retail is going through rapid change. Modern radio-based applications, such as electronic shelf labels and location-based services for smartphone users, are optimizing in-store processes and laying the foundations for new business models and shopping experiences. LANCOM Systems, the leading German manufacturer of networking solutions for the commercial and public sectors, introduces a worldwide first that integrates the different radio technologies into a single infrastructure platform. The new E-series access points support classic WLAN, electronic shelf labels (ESL) and iBeacons. The benefits: Lower costs, longer service life of the electronic shelf labels, and a high degree of sustainability.

This worldwide novelty is the result of close cooperation with the Austrian ESL specialist imagotag, the developer of the wireless technology for label control.

The electronic price displays are one of the top trends in retail. According to a recent retail survey , the worldwide market for electronic shelf labels (ESL) is set to grow by an average of 18 percent annually until the year 2018. In Germany, too, retailers are increasingly adopting ESL. Large retailers are already gathering their first experience with electronic goods labels and price tags.

A particularly energy-saving radio technology that controls the electronic price labels ensures that the battery-powered displays have a long service life. Until now, operating these systems required the costly installation and operation of a dedicated infrastructure. Compounding the problem was the interference with existing wireless LAN infrastructures, since both of these technologies operate in the same frequency band (2.4 GHz). Wireless LAN is very widespread in brick-and-mortar retail. Uses include wireless stocktaking or the provision of fast Internet access to customers.

Lower costs, high investment protection
LANCOM has fine-tuned the two wireless technologies to provide interference-free parallel operation in close cooperation with ESL specialist imagotag, developer of the wireless solution for controlling the electronic shelf labels and supplier of the ESLs. Retailers benefit from a lower up-front investment, low operating costs, and a long service life of the battery-powered price tags that operate in parallel to the wireless LAN.

Integrated iBeacon technology for location-based services
Along with wireless LAN and ESL, the new LANCOM E-series access points support a third wireless technology. The integration of iBeacons enables retailers and operators of shopping malls to implement innovative location-based services, including:

  • Location-dependent push marketing: Customers in the vicinity receive special offers via app-based push messages on their smartphones.
  • Indoor navigation: Radio-controlled localization in combination with an app- or Web-based floor plan conveniently guides customers to the desired offers or shop.
  • Business intelligence: Analysis of customer walk paths helps to optimize the layout of the sales floor.

Christian Schallenberg, Member of the Management Board at LANCOM Systems: “I am convinced that electronic shelf labels and location-based services offer enormous potential for the retail sector. Just think about dynamic pricing or improved customer communications. Even today, projects like this frequently fail because of the costs or the technical hurdles. By integrating the ESL and iBeacon technologies in a single professional WLAN infrastructure, the retail sector has the unique opportunity to present themselves as innovative and quick to respond to trends, quite apart from entering into a whole new form of customer dialog. And all of this in a cost-effective, efficient and low-maintenance package.”

Dr. Michael Moosburger, founder and Managing Director of imagotag, agrees about the enormous potential for this solution: “Electronic price displays are the major future trend in retail. By combining our ESL technology with wireless LAN and iBeacons, we have jointly created a unique infrastructure solution, which offers completely new possibilities of flexible pricing and customer loyalty to the brick-and-mortar retail sector.”

Pricing and availability
The new LANCOM E-series access points are available now from specialist resellers and LANCOM Distributor VoIPDistri.com. Also available are the electronic shelf labels from imagotag as well as the central server for controlling the ESLs.

LANCOM Systems background:
LANCOM Systems GmbH is the leading German manufacturer of reliable, innovative network solutions for business customers. LANCOM’s two business units, VPN Network Connectivity and Wireless LAN, offer professional users secure, flexible infrastructure solutions for local-area and multi-site networks. The entire core product range is developed and manufactured in Germany. In addition, LANCOM also provides VPN solutions certified by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for the protection of particularly sensitive networks and critical infrastructures (EPCIP) against cyber attacks. LANCOM Systems headquarters is in Würselen near Aachen, Germany, and other offices are located throughout Europe. Customers include small and medium-sized enterprises, government agencies, institutions, and major corporations from Germany, Europe and increasingly worldwide. The enterprise is a partner in the Alliance for Cyber Security initiated by the BSI.

Background, imagotag:
imagotag stands for innovation and advanced technologies. The company founded by Dr. Michael Moosburger and Andreas Rössl in 2010 quickly became the leading company for electronic shelf labels (ESL) and digital signage solutions. After many years of experience in the development of software, hardware and radio technologies, the company draws on extensive expertise in the retail and logistics industries. The use of modern technologies at the point of sale is a guarantee of competitive advantage, increased customer satisfaction, as well as improvements in image and efficiency. In early 2014, imagotag entered a strategic partnership with Store Electronic System / SES Group, the global leader in Electronic Shelf Labeling (ESL).

New snom M700 DECT base station enables seamless handover, supports up to 200 M65 DECT cordless handsets, 40 base stations and 100 repeaters on the same network

snom technology AG, a leading developer of IP desktop business phones, today announced a new lineup of IP-based cordless DECT products delivering major improvements in coverage, reliability and features.

The new snom M65 IP DECT phone, M700 multi-cell base station and the M5 DECT repeater are the first of a new wave of innovative communications products that snom will bring to market in the coming months.

snom is already on the leading edge of SIP-based desktop phone development, with a full complement of feature-rich, affordable endpoints for every business need. Now it is broadening its reach to satisfy the millions of business users requiring on-site mobility.

The M65 handset combines business communications functionality with the intuitive features offered by mobile carriers. It is ideal for businesses that require mobile coverage across several floors or throughout large buildings.

The new generation of snom DECT phones integrates seamlessly with existing phone systems for presence, paging and other capabilities, and is far less expensive and offer better call quality than cellular phones.

The new snom M700 multi-cell base station delivers expanded coverage over several floors or throughout large buildings. It links multiple M700 base stations together to form a network enabling free movement and seamless handover between base stations for uninterrupted calls while moving from one base station to the next.

The M700, which can be used in single cell or multi-cell configuration, supports up to 200 handsets, 40 base stations and 100 repeaters in the same installation.

The M65 phone has a two-inch backlit color display and a backlit keypad for dialing in poor lighting conditions. Other features include wideband audio (including speakerphone) for the crispest voice quality, six polyphonic ringtones and vibration setting for incoming calls.

Dual internal antennas ensure reliable reception, with talk time of up to 17 hours between charges. When used with the new snom M700 base station, the M65 features voicemail, call forwarding, call lists, caller ID, direct search in a corporate directory, 3-way conferencing, auto answer, two simultaneous calls and many other capabilities.

The cordless DECT phone offers expanded range and is operational up to about 130 feet beyond its base station in a typical office environment. Shop floors can expect range of about 195 feet and about 300 feet for production areas, without obstacles.

“Our M65 DECT phone and M700 base station represents a new generation of feature-rich mobility for business users,” said Tom Ostrander, Director of North American Channel Sales. “These new products offer expanded range, and more features and flexibility for administrators to easily increase the number of users while maintaining performance.”

DECT phones offer a multitude of benefits for business users and administrators including: large coverage area, low cost; high capacity; very high security and call quality.

These benefits are applicable to businesses of any size.

Base stations, which are an integral part of DECT infrastructure and cordless VoIP communications, support HD audio and synchronize themselves – no additional hardware necessary.

The new snom M5 repeater, which includes DECT encryption, increases reception range and bridges any gaps between base stations, ensuring the continuity of calls and eliminating blind spots.

The snom M65 DECT phone and M700 base station are interoperable with all major VoIP systems.

The M65 phone and the M700 base station will be available in mid-October, 2014. The M5 repeater will be available later this year.

Along with the new DECT products, snom also unveiled today a new modernized, streamlined corporate logo that better reflects our product portfolio.

snom’s new DECT lineup gives business users – whether in an office building, conference hall or production facility – the flexibility to be more mobile, which, in today’s environment, is an absolute requirement.
